Home destroyed by major fire

23/07/2008 8:18:00 AM
A HOUSE in Sanctuary Point was destroyed by fire yesterday, with investigations continuing into the cause of the blaze.

Volunteer firefighters across the Bay and Basin area responded to a house fire in Frederick Street.

Crews from Basin View, Culburra Beach, Huskisson, Sanctuary Point, St Georges Basin and Erowal Bay arrived at the scene at 7.30am to find the house completely alight.

Fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus worked inside the home to extinguish the blaze, however the house and the car in the garage were destroyed.

The five residents of the home were not seriously injured in the blaze, but several required treatment for smoke inhalation and were treated by ambulance crews at the scene.

Crews worked for over an hour to bring the fire under control.

A NSW Rural Fire Service fire investigation team is investigating the cause of the blaze.

Preliminary examinations have determined there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire.

“Yesterday’s house fire highlights the need for residents to install and regularly check smoke alarms in their homes,” acting district manager of Shoalhaven, Inspector Tim Carroll said.

Shoalhaven residents wanting further information regarding smoke alarms should contact the local NSW Rural Fire Service on

4424 4424 during business hours.
