Missing persons focus turns to technology

THE high numbers of teenagers who go missing has resulted in youth-focused websites including MySpace and Facebook being used for the first time to promote National Missing Persons Week.

Leonie Jacques from the Australia Federal Police’s Missing Persons Coordination Centre said the right communications channels had to be used to make young people aware of the problems caused when people go missing.

“About 20,000 young people go missing each year and research indicates they are predominantly female and aged between 13 and 17 years, so this year’s campaign aims to focus on this group by using a medium they identify with,” she said.
