Sussex riders get on track

23/07/2008 8:37:00 AM
SUSSEX Inlet riders are one step closer to a temporary BMX track, with Shoalhaven City Council working towards obtaining Crown Land for the site.

Council staff investigated five sites in Sussex Inlet as potential locations for a temporary track.

A meeting was then held on June 16 with council staff and representatives from the Thompson Street Sporting Complex management committee and the Sussex Inlet Community Forum executive.

Several potential sites were discussed at the meeting, including three sections of the Thompson Street Sporting Complex.

Community members at the meeting supported the construction of a temporary BMX track in the north western corner of the complex.

Council staff examined the site, which is currently used by BMX riders as an unofficial track, and found it to be accessible, not immediately adjacent to any existing residences and relatively cleared.

However the lot was classified Crown Land and not managed by council.

Based on the feedback from the public meeting and staff investigations it was suggested the site was the best option and council should approach the Department of Lands to transfer the land to council as trust manager.

“The section of land proposed for transfer can also accommodate part of a future sports field,” a report to council stated.

Members of the Crown Reserve, Community and Commercial Operations Committee last week voted in support of the recommendation, which was put before council last night.
