THE South Coast Security Shoalhaven State League women’s basketball team will host a quarter final of the NSW State Basketball League at the Tigers Den tomorrow night.
The big game will see the Tigers come up against the Wagga Wagga Blaze, tipping off at 5pm - doors opening at 4pm.
The Tiger women finished on top of the Pool B ladder with an 11 and one record and will host the fourth placed team in Pool B, Wagga who finished their regular season with a six and six record.
The Tiger women have accounted for the Blaze in both their meetings this season, back in round five at home the Tigers took a victory 79–61 and again in round seven on the road 75–58.
But the Tigers won’t be taking their opponents too lightly as finals basketball brings the best out of the underdogs.
The good news for the Tigers is they will be at full strength with the return of starting point guard Kelsey Gardiner, who has been away representing NSW Country at the under 18 National Championships and former WNBL three time Canberra Capitals championship forward Kelly Hannett, who is yet to face the blaze this season.
She is currently sitting in third position on the league’s leading scorers averaging 20.14 points per game.
They will join regular players like Simone Gibbs, Sandra Ozolins, Kate Denyer, Razz Muir and Nicole Faulks, who are all fit and well.
“The side is keen to secure back-to-back titles and that all starts tomorrow in the quarter finals at home,” said Shoalhaven coach Scott Balsar.
“The game will be tough, Wagga is a good team, they have also troubled us a bit in the past.
“Our defence will be the key tomorrow night.
“We pride ourselves on our offence most of the time, tomorrow night hopefully it will be the reverse - in the past two games our defence has been much better and will continue to be so for us to win tomorrow.
“We need to communicate and be more persistent and aggressive in our defence - our goal will be to shut the Blaze down full stop.”
The Tigers are coming off two good wins against the Power who they beat by 50 and then backed up with a gutsy 15 point win over the second placed team the Newcastle Hunters.
The Blaze is also coming off a good win against the Dubbo Rams, the side that upset the Tigers a month or so ago.
“They will be keen to beat us at home,” Balsar said.
“We need another sellout crowd to cheer us on.
“It is our last game at home, our last few crowds have been fantastic and to have such a huge vocal crowd is a boost - they get us across the line.”
Balsar said his team is ready, despite not having played a State League game in the past two weeks.
“We have played some games against ABA teams and our local junior representative men’s sides and this has helped us immensely,” he said.
“We know what it takes with eight of our 12 players having finals basketball experience, it puts us in good position.
“Experience is irreplaceable and I will be calling on the girls with this experience to get the job done and I’m sure they will all rise to the occasion.”
Tomorrow night will be a huge evening of entertainment, there will be giveaways, prizes, a 100 club and much more.
Tickets are available at the door on the night $5 adults, $3 child 17 years and under or $15 a family (two adults, two children).
