Arazny Australian champion

27/08/2008 10:25:00 AM
CAMBEWARRA snowboarder Amber Arazny has added more titles to her growing list of achievements, claiming two Australian titles.

She has taken out first place at the Australian Junior Pro Series, the Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage at Perisher.

Seventeen-year-old Amber, took out the senior girls’ division.

The competition included four events, two slope style, one big air and a half pipe.

She placed first in the half-pipe, was second in the big air and secured a fourth and a second in the slope style events.

Those results were enough for her to grab first outright, an improvement on last year when she placed second.

“I was happy with my performances,” she said.

“It was good to go one better than last year.”

She backed that up by taking out another half pipe comp, the Australian Freestyle Championships.

Amber took out the 14-19 years division and said she was “surprised” by her win.

“It was something I didn’t really expect,” she said.

Each competitor had two runs to qualify for the finals, and then again had two runs in the final, with their best score counting.

It’s been a challenging year for Amber who has also juggled her HSC.

“It’s been a busy year mixing competition, training and study,” she admitted.

Instead of moving to the snowfields for winter and attending Cooma High School as she has done in previous years, she elected to stay local and complete her studies.

“It certainly meant a lot more travelling,” she said

“We would just pack up and head down each weekend.”

Turning 18 next month means this year is Amber’s last chance to compete as a junior.

And she is already focussed on adding to what is shaping up to be a stellar season.

Her next major event is the Australian Burton Open at the beginning of next month, mind you this will be an open competition.

“There will be some big names there,” she said.

“It’s an open competition, so I’m up against the likes of Tora Bright.

“It will be big and tough competition, but I’ll give it my best shot.”

She also has the New Zealand Junior Nationals at the end of September and along with her twin sister Tegan will line up at the State Interschools Championships in Thredbo.

At the regionals they placed third in the boardercross and giant slalom.
