CULBURRA Beach surfing family, the Wrights reigned supreme at this year’s 2007-08 Shoalhaven Sportstar of the Year awards, taking out two of the three awards up for offer.
In front of a packed house at the Bomaderry Bowling Club on Friday night, 33 local athletes fought it out for this year’s coveted award, but it was the brother and sister combination of Owen and Tyler Wright who took out the major awards.
Owen won the Shoalhaven Sportstar of the Year, while his younger sister Tyler made it a huge night for the family taking out the Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemen’s Club Junior Sportstar of the Year.
Not to be outdone inspirational marathon kayaker Dianne Chellew also won the Masters Award.
Unfortunately Owen was unable to be at the awards as he was surfing in Bali, trying to qualify for a world tour event, but in accepting the award on his behalf, his father Robbie said his son would be “stoked”.
And the Wrights are a real surfing dynasty, they are quickly being compared to the Chappells and Waughs of the cricketing world.
All five children surf, with Tim just completing his plumbing apprenticeship taking a break from competition, while Kirby and youngster Michael have also posted impressive results this year.
Owen and Tyler have both had superb seasons, with the highlight among many outstanding achievements included both being members of the Australian team that won the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships at Le Penon Beach in France.
They also both won the individual silver medals, Owen in the boys under 18 and Tyler (14) for girls under 18.
The other major award on Friday evening was the Masters division (Over 35s) which was taken out by champion kayaker Dianne Chellew, who swept all before her at the Masters World Cup in Hungary picking up two gold and a silver medal.
In announcing the winners chairman of the Bomaderry Bowling Club Peter Ingram said how proud the club was to be involved in the awards.
He also paid credit to Denis Laverty and the team at the Bomaderry RSL Club for their support of the award over many years.
“We are very proud to be involved in the Sportstar of the Year awards and plan to be involved for many years to come,” he said.
