Roos grand final bound

Illaroo scores solid semi-final victory

ILLAROO is the first team through to the grand final of the Shoalhaven Senior Football first grade competition, downing St Georges Basin 3-nil in Saturday’s major semi-final at the South Nowra Football Complex.

The Roos are now just one win away from making a cleansweep of the 2008 competition, having already taken out the FA Cup Competition and the Competition Championship.

The premiership title would complete a remarkable season.

The Roos withstood a strong opening surge from the Basin before scoring two goals in five minutes to Jamie Thomas and Daniel Frew to lead 2-nil at half-time.

And despite the Basin coming back in the second half, the Roos were never going to be headed, wrapping up the win with three minutes remaining when Andrew Timbs brilliantly curled the ball around the wall from a freekick just outside the box into the top left corner for a 3-nil advantage.

It was a big weekend of football action at South Nowra with the minor semi-finals being staged yesterday.

• Full details of all the semi-final action appears on pages 44-45.
