NOW that the caretaker period has begun, the countdown to the local government election is well and well truly ticking.
That means people of voting age should be enrolled so they can help shape the future of the community in which they live. And that deadline is almost upon us, with new voters or those who are new to the area being able to enrol no later than 6pm on Monday. Even non-resident ratepayers are eligible to cast a vote but they must be on the roll.
Why is it important to vote, particularly in this election? Well, local government decisions impact directly on the community. If the community doesn’t like what has happening, September 13 is the opportunity to make that displeasure known. It’s an opportunity that only comes around once every four years and is the ultimate expression of people power.
Between elections, we often see frustration at our elected representatives because of a perception that they don’t listen. On September 13, it is guaranteed they will listen closer than at any other time during the election.
