WHILE I have due respect for all candidates going for the local council election and mayor positions I would question the mayoral candidates with no council experience going for the top job. We have them every election with pie-in-the-sky brainwaves, one being having the second airport in the Shoalhaven.
This was suggested back in the 1980s. For a start, the Navy would not want it nor the people so you can put that one to bed.
Next is to stop the link road that has been planned for years and the other idea to set up a committee to deal with developments. Companies have enough trouble now trying to get developments through without more red tape.
As far as council candidates go I do agree some have been there too long and need to go and some new faces would be welcome. However, you still need an experienced leader such as Greg Watson. Love him or hate him, he has been good for the Shoalhaven. He is well known, has the contacts and is in favour of developments. He may have made mistakes but who has not?
He needs another four years to see his visions through, then retire gracefully and hand over to somebody like Gareth Ward, who would be older and wiser, that is, of course, if he wanted the job.
The alternative so called Shoalhaven Action Campaign would be a disaster for Shoalhaven. Every time they open their mouths they say they are not against development. In the next breath they are against this or that. This group also seems to have a fixation with high-rise buildings. Huskisson needs a makeover and developers will not invest with too many rules and regulations.
You need to think about the younger generation which I am sure would not give a stuff about what height the building is. They want entertainment, which would occur if development was allowed. So it is all very well to say we need a change but at what cost?
